Growth Timeline

  • Growing Season: Most fruits/veggies have their peak growing season starting in spring and extending through fall. They need a runway of consecutive warm days and nights (from 60-90) to produce fruit.
  • First Harvest: Fruits/veggies take 2-3 months to bear fruit and/or reach ripeness.
  • Final Harvest: Fruits/veggies start to give out between late summer and early fall in most climates. Some plants, such as strawberries, will become dormant in winter before popping back into action in for spring, but most fruiting plants will need to be replaced after their season is over.

Support Trailing Plants: Unless you are growing smaller plants (jalapeño or micro-tomatoes) you might want to use stakes, trellises, or cages to support the plants as they grow. This will prevent them from sprawling on the ground. Train the vines to grow vertically for better air circulation and easier harvesting.

Long Island Cheese Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata 'Long Island Cheese') is a magnificent, heirloom pumpkin variety steeped in American agricultural history, prized for its distinctive flattened, deeply ribbed shape and warm tan skin that bears a striking resemblance to a wheel of aged cheese. One of the oldest and most beloved pumpkin varieties in North American cultivation, Long Island Cheese was a staple of Long Island market gardens throughout the 19th century and remains highly valued today for its exceptional culinary qualities — producing dense, smooth, sweet orange flesh with a rich, complex flavor that is outstanding for pies, soups, roasting, and baking. This is the pumpkin that inspired classic American pumpkin pie long before the modern sugar pumpkin became the standard.

These 4" organic seedlings are grown to the highest nursery standards with professional-grade root development, ready to establish quickly and produce abundantly in the summer garden. Long Island Cheese Pumpkin thrives in full sun with rich, well-amended soil and consistent moisture, producing large, beautiful fruits of 6–10 pounds each on vigorous, sprawling vines that deliver an impressive harvest by mid-fall. Its heirloom heritage, exceptional flavor, and stunning visual appearance make it as ornamental as it is edible — a garden showpiece that earns its place in every kitchen garden.

  • Distinctive Heirloom Appearance: Flattened, deeply ribbed tan fruits with a unique cheese-wheel shape are as beautiful as they are delicious — stunning as ornamental display pumpkins and exceptional as a culinary variety.
  • Outstanding Culinary Quality: Dense, smooth, deeply flavored sweet orange flesh is prized for pies, soups, purees, and roasting — widely considered one of the finest flavored pumpkins for cooking and baking.
  • Impressive Fruit Size & Yield: Vigorous vines produce generous yields of large 6–10 pound fruits, providing an abundant harvest of beautiful, flavorful pumpkins for the kitchen and the table.
  • Rich American Heirloom Heritage: One of the oldest cultivated pumpkin varieties in North America — a living connection to 19th century Long Island market garden tradition and classic American culinary history.
  • Excellent Storage & Keeping Quality: Thick, dense flesh and sturdy skin provide outstanding storage longevity — fruits keep well for months after harvest, extending enjoyment from fall deep into winter.

These 4" healthy live organic seedlings thrive in full sun with rich, well-amended, consistently moist soil. Water deeply and regularly throughout the growing season. Plant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Days to maturity: approximately 100–110 days from transplant. Vines spread 8–12 feet — allow ample space or train carefully. Harvest when skin has fully hardened and stem has dried. Cure at room temperature for 10–14 days after harvest to develop full flavor and extend storage life.

We take great care to ensure our seedlings are healthy and well-established before they’re shipped. We pre-germinate the organic seeds and grow them up to 12 weeks before shipping them as mature plants ready for transplant. Seedlings typically arrive within 1-4 days.
