FAQs

What is calendula, and how is it different from marigold?

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is often called pot marigold, but it's a different plant from the Tagetes marigolds commonly sold as ornamentals. Calendula has long been prized as an herb — its flowers are edible, traditionally used in teas and salves, and are completely distinct from Tagetes in fragrance, flavor, and use.

Are calendula flowers edible?

Yes. Calendula petals are edible with a mild, slightly peppery flavor. They're commonly used as a garnish, tossed into salads, or steeped in infusions. All of our calendula plants are grown without synthetic pesticides, making them safe to harvest straight from the garden.

Is calendula annual or perennial?

Calendula is typically grown as a cool-season annual. It thrives in cooler temperatures and may slow or stop blooming in intense summer heat, then rebound in fall. In mild climates it self-seeds and behaves as a short-lived perennial, returning year after year from dropped seed.

How much sun does calendula need?

Calendula does best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers cool, mild temperatures and is one of the few flowering plants that thrives in early spring and late fall conditions. In hot climates, afternoon shade extends the blooming season considerably.

What if my calendula plant arrives damaged?

We stand behind every plant we ship. If your calendula arrives damaged, send us a photo within a few days of delivery and we'll arrange a free replacement.
