Cosmo Purple Chrysanthemum fills a low mound with large double purple flowers, layered like a dahlia's and up to five inches across. It is one of the Cosmo series, known for that full, dahlia-like form, and its rich color anchors a planting from summer into fall.

Use it in a container or combination planter with silver foliage or white flowers to set off the purple, or line it along the front of a border. The big blooms are good for cutting. Plant it in full sun or partial shade and water moderately; it copes with brief dry spells, and deer usually leave it be. Deadhead faded flowers to keep the plant neat.

Fun fact: Chrysanthemums and dahlias, which its flowers resemble, both belong to the daisy family.
