What can I grow?
What can I grow?
The Planted Wall is ideal for lettuces, leafy greens, herbs, floral plants, and small fruiting plants. Refer to page 5 of our official guide to see which plant varieties grow in each season. If you live in an area that is outstandingly hot or cold, you'll need to follow a few guidelines:
COLD CLIMATES
- If you live in a location where the temperatures dip below freezing, then you'll want to hold off on growing until night temperatures are in the 40's consistently.
- On the occasional dips into the 30's, you can cover with a sheet or bring them indoors for that time period. The breeze is good for plants and helps to keep bugs at bay, so growing outdoors in the daytime is still optimal.
- For herbs, you may want to wait to grow herbs until night temperatures are in the 50's consistently.
WARM CLIMATES:
- If you live where it reaches above 90 degrees consistently, you'll want to grow heat tolerant fruiting plants (tomatoes and peppers) and herbs (basil, mint, rosemary) primarily.
To find out what extreme temperatures your location experiences, check out the USDA zone for your region.
Where can I place my Wall?
Where can I place my Wall?
The Planted Wall is designed for tight outdoor spaces. Think balconies, patios and decks. At only 2ft by 2ft, it takes up about the same space as a person standing. For optimal results, you'll want to find a spot that gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight a day, but you'll still see results with less. The lockable wheels make it easy to move around so you can try out different locations as you please.

What's the time commitment?
It only takes 5-15 minutes per week to take care of the Planted Wall. Regular care tasks include turning the water pump on/off, snipping the occasional dead leaf, and shooing off the occasional insect. It's our mission to enable you to reap the benefits of serious gardening without requiring you to put in much time at all. Your seedlings arrive already planted in the same premium soil that will nurture them all the way through maturity, taking the burden of planting and even upkeep largely off your hands.
Is my climate appropriate for growing food outside?
Our seedling selection is always suited for the season, so in most climates, you'll be able to grow year round!
However, if you live in a location where the temperatures dip below freezing, you'll will want to hold off on planting until night temperatures are back in the 40's. For occasional dips into the 30's, you can cover the Wall with a sheet overnight.
For warmer environments (above 90 degrees consistently), you'll find the best luck growing herbs and heat-tolerant fruiting plants, such as tomatoes and peppers.

The Planted Wall is ideal for lettuces, leafy greens, herbs, many floral plants, and small fruiting plants. If you live in an area that is outstandingly hot or cold, you'll need to follow a few guidelines:

How much can I grow?
You can grow ~14-25 pounds of fresh product every month during peak growing season. That's 4 salads a week for a family of 4!
You don't have to wait to harvest- we encourage grazing off your plants as soon as they have at least 3 mature leaves (4-5" long).
Can I get help once I have my Planted Wall?
Your purchase of the Planted Wall includes 8 weeks of training and support. That's enough for multiple harvests! Our digital course provides a step-by-step guide to the basics of successful growing. You'll also gain access to our private VIP portal that includes seasonal garden guides, educational videos, weekly tips & tricks, and a private Facebook community.
How do I justify the cost of this purchase?
Let's start with the water bill. You use 99% less water when you grow on the Planted Wall using the recirculating watering system versus a raised garden bed with a drip system.
Next, the average family spend $30-40 a week on produce, just for about 40% of it to end up as food waste, which ends up generating methane gas at the landfill. Compare that to an average seedling & soil replenish expense of $30-40 every 6 weeks, with none of it going to waste because you only harvest what you need.
Lastly, there are the hidden costs of building your own raised bed - materials, organic soil, amendments, ongoing maintenance, and initial labor add up to about $1,100, on average.
How often do I need to replace my plants?
It depends on your climate and harvesting habits. Different plants also have different lifespans. Plants will last longer if you leave them enough leafs to continue soaking up solar power. But generally, plants have a lifespan of about 6-12 weeks, with leafy greens on the shorter end of that spectrum and herbs lasting the longest.
We recommend getting a seedling bundle subscription with monthly deliveries in the peak seasons and every other month in the slower seasons. If you're growing primarily herbs, a quarterly frequency may be best depending on how often you harvest.
