Cotula makes a low silver-green cushion of finely cut, softly hairy foliage that would be worth growing if it never flowered at all. Then bright yellow buttons rise a few inches above the mat. Cotula hispida arrives as a live 4-inch plant.

It is a specialist in small dry places: the edge of a gravel path, a pocket in a rock garden, the gap between stepping stones, the front rank of a sunny container. The evergreen foliage keeps those spots furnished year-round without swallowing them, and deer pass it by. Full sun and gritty, sharply drained soil build the densest cushion. Let it dry lightly between waterings and keep it clear of winter wet.

Fun fact: Those buttons are daisies with the petals left off. Every floret in the head is a disc floret, so you get pure color and no rays at all.
