Frequently Asked Questions

Violas and pansies are closely related — pansies are actually a type of viola (Viola × wittrockiana). Violas tend to be smaller-flowered, more free-blooming, and slightly more heat and cold tolerant than standard pansies. Both are excellent cool-season bloomers with similar care requirements. Most garden violas are grown as cool-season annuals — they bloom best in spring and fall and tend to fade in summer heat. Some viola species are true perennials in cooler climates. Individual listings will note whether a variety is annual or perennial. Violas prefer cool temperatures and do best in full sun to partial shade. They tolerate light frost and are ideal for planting when many other flowering plants have finished. In mild climates they can bloom for extended periods through the cooler months. Violas come in deep violet, yellow, lavender, white, apricot, and bicolors — many with distinctive "faces" marked in contrasting colors.
