Deep Orange Viola is a pansy in a deep, saturated orange, with extra-large flowers held on short, strong stems above a compact, well-branched plant. The Spring Matrix series blooms earlier than the original Matrix line and flowers heavily and evenly.

Plant it for color from fall through spring in beds, borders and pots, where the warm orange lights up gray days. The flowers are fragrant, and bees and butterflies visit them. Give it sun or partial shade with moderate watering. It is a short-lived perennial that most gardeners grow as a cool-season annual, setting out fresh plants each fall.

Design note: Orange pansies look especially good with blue or purple ones and with the dark leaves of heuchera, so try it in a mixed pot by the door.
