FAQs

Are nasturtium flowers edible?

Yes — nasturtium flowers and leaves are both edible. They have a bright, peppery flavor similar to watercress and are excellent tossed into salads, used as a garnish, or eaten straight from the garden. The unripe seed pods can also be pickled as a caper substitute. All parts of the plant are edible.

Are nasturtiums annual or perennial?

Nasturtiums are typically grown as annuals in most climates — they're frost-sensitive and complete their life cycle in one season. In frost-free climates they may persist as short-lived perennials. They self-seed readily, so once established in a bed they'll often return from dropped seed the following year.

What's the difference between trailing and compact nasturtiums?

Trailing nasturtiums produce long, vining stems that cascade over the edges of containers, hanging baskets, and raised beds. Compact or mounding varieties stay bushier and are better suited to garden borders and beds where you want a more contained plant. Both bloom prolifically and are equally easy to grow.

How much sun do nasturtiums need?

Nasturtiums do best in full sun to partial shade. Leaner soil and full sun actually encourages more flowering — overly rich soil tends to produce lush foliage at the expense of blooms. They're one of the most low-maintenance flowering plants you can grow.
