Carnations — Dianthus — are classic cut flowers prized for their clove-like fragrance, long vase life, and remarkable range of colors. Garden varieties bring months of bloom to borders and containers, while taller cutting types produce long-stemmed flowers well-suited for arrangements. Dianthus thrives in full sun and cool to mild temperatures and is among the most rewarding plants for a cutting garden. Available in a range of colors from deep red and coral to white, pink, and bicolors.

FAQs

Is carnation the same as Dianthus?

Yes — carnation is the common name for Dianthus caryophyllus, one of the most widely grown species in the Dianthus genus. The broader Dianthus genus also includes garden pinks and sweet william. When we refer to carnations, we mean plants in the Dianthus family known for their clove-fragrant, fringed-petal flowers and excellent cut-flower performance.

Are carnations perennial?

Carnations and many Dianthus varieties are perennial in mild climates (USDA zones 5–9), returning year after year. In colder zones they may be treated as annuals. Garden pinks and some Dianthus hybrids are reliably cold-hardy; cutting-type carnations vary by variety — check individual listings for hardiness information.

Do carnations make good cut flowers?

Carnations are exceptional cut flowers — they have one of the longest vase lives of any garden flower, often lasting two weeks or more with regular water changes. They're among the best plants you can grow for a home cutting garden.

How much sun do carnation plants need?

Carnations need full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. They prefer cool to mild temperatures and may slow blooming in intense summer heat. Good drainage is essential; carnations dislike wet feet and will decline in waterlogged soil.
