Are dahlias annual or perennial?

Dahlias are perennial in frost-free climates (USDA zones 8–10) but are grown as annuals in most parts of the country. In colder zones, the tubers can be dug up after the first frost, stored through winter, and replanted in spring — giving you years of blooms from the same plant.

Do dahlias make good cut flowers?

Dahlias are exceptional cut flowers. They respond to cutting with more blooms — the more you cut, the more the plant produces. Harvest stems in the morning when flowers are just opening, place immediately in water, and they'll last well in a vase.

What conditions do dahlias need?

Dahlias thrive in full sun (at least 6–8 hours per day), rich well-drained soil, and consistent moisture. They're heavy feeders — a balanced fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season drives stronger growth and more blooms. Taller varieties may need staking as they fill out.
