About this Plant

Plantain Thrift (Armeria alliacea) is a robust and elegant perennial that offers a more substantial presence than the common sea thrift. Native to the sunny hillsides of Spain, this species features broader, sword-shaped evergreen leaves that form a sturdy, grass-like tuft. In late spring and summer, it sends up tall, wiry stems topped with perfectly round, globe-shaped flower heads in shades of soft pink to white, creating a whimsical "drumstick" effect in the garden.

As a resilient member of the Armeria genus, A. alliacea is a champion of low-water and coastal gardening. It is exceptionally wind-tolerant and thrives in lean, well-drained soils where other perennials might struggle. It is a fantastic choice for rock gardens, trough containers, or as a tidy edging for garden paths. Its architectural foliage remains green and attractive year-round, even through the winter months.

Why you’ll love it:

  • Unique Flower Form: Charming "pom-pom" flowers on stiff, upright stems.
  • Drought Tolerant: Once established, it requires very little supplemental water.
  • Evergreen Interest: Stiff, green foliage mounds look great in every season.
  • Salt & Wind Resistant: A perfect choice for coastal gardens or exposed, breezy sites.

This healthy 4"" live flowering plant thrives in full sun and requires sharp drainage to prevent center-rot.
