English Thyme is a live 4-inch plant that builds a low woody mound of tiny gray-green leaves, aromatic enough that walking past is sufficient to set the scent loose.

Thymus vulgaris is one of the great edging plants: run it along a walkway where shoes brush it, let it soften the front of a sunny border, or spill it over a rock garden ledge or container rim. It wants full sun, light chalky or sandy ground and sharp drainage, since heavy feeding and wet soil both cost you that compact shape. From late spring into summer the stem tips carry whorls of small white, pink and lavender flowers, and bees and butterflies find them at once.

Fun fact: thyme is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, which makes it a rare front-of-border plant you can place without a second thought about the pets.
