Mrs. Beard California Sage (Salvia 'Mrs. Beard') is a graceful, free-flowering California native hybrid salvia producing a generous profusion of soft lavender-blue flower spikes above a mound of aromatic, finely textured grey-green foliage — a classic, naturalistic combination that brings authentic California coastal chaparral beauty to mixed perennial borders, native plant gardens, and low-water organic landscapes. This outstanding native-heritage salvia hybrid is prized for its refined, well-mannered habit, prolific long bloom season, exceptional drought and heat tolerance, and the superb ecological value it provides to native bees, hummingbirds, and beneficial insects throughout the extended bloom season.

Grown from certified organic heritage stock, each plant arrives with a Professional Grade root system — deep, fibrous, and fully established for vigorous growth in challenging low-water and coastal conditions. Mrs. Beard thrives in full sun to light shade with excellent drainage and is highly drought tolerant once established — an essential plant for water-wise, fire-resistant, California native, and low-maintenance organic landscape applications across a wide range of warm-climate growing conditions. Its soft lavender-blue flower spikes, aromatic grey-green foliage, and outstanding native ecological value make it an invaluable anchor for California native plant gardens, pollinator habitats, and Mediterranean-style organic landscapes throughout the entire growing season.

  • Authentic California Native Heritage — A California native hybrid salvia with authentic chaparral heritage, perfectly adapted to Pacific Coast and Mediterranean-climate conditions including drought, heat, poor soils, and coastal exposure throughout the seasons.
  • Prolific Soft Lavender-Blue Blooms — Produces a generous profusion of soft lavender-blue flower spikes over an exceptionally long bloom season, delivering authentic California native color and naturalistic garden beauty from late spring through fall.
  • Exceptional Drought & Heat Tolerance — Highly drought resistant once established, thriving with minimal supplemental irrigation through the most intense California summer heat — essential for water-wise, fire-resistant, and low-water organic landscape applications.
  • Premier Native Pollinator & Hummingbird Plant — Lavender-blue flower spikes are outstanding attractors for native bees, hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, and beneficial insects, providing critical habitat and forage for native pollinators throughout the extended bloom season.
  • Fire-Resistant Water-Wise Landscape Essential — Aromatic grey-green foliage and drought-adapted habit make Mrs. Beard an essential plant for fire-resistant, water-wise, and California-friendly low-water native landscape designs of all scales.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun to light shade with excellent drainage — plant in well-drained to sandy or rocky soil and water moderately until established, after which minimal to no supplemental irrigation is needed. Hardy in USDA zones 8–10, growing 24–36" tall with a spread of 24–36". Soft lavender-blue flower spikes bloom late spring through fall (April–October); trim lightly after each bloom flush to encourage vigorous reblooming, maintain a tidy naturalistic form, and extend the productive life of the plant for many seasons.
