Midnight Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha 'Midnight') is a spectacular, intensely colored perennial salvia producing dramatic, velvety arching spikes of deep, rich dark purple flowers and calyces in a uniform, all-dark-purple display — a moody, jewel-toned selection that delivers even greater color depth and intensity than the classic purple-and-white form, creating an unforgettable, saturated dark-purple focal point in mixed perennial borders, hummingbird gardens, and large container arrangements from late summer through fall. The richly uniform, velvety dark purple color of 'Midnight' is widely regarded as one of the deepest, most saturated, and most visually dramatic flower colors available in any late-season ornamental perennial.

Grown from certified organic heritage stock, each plant arrives with a Professional Grade root system — deep, fibrous, and fully established for vigorous, impressive first-season growth. Midnight thrives in full sun with excellent drainage and develops strong drought tolerance once established, excelling in water-wise, Mediterranean-style, fire-resistant, and low-maintenance organic landscape applications. Its large, dramatically arching velvety all-dark-purple flower spikes, bold architectural habit, and spectacular late-season bloom timing make it an irreplaceable anchor in mixed perennial borders, hummingbird gardens, and large container arrangements where deep, richly saturated dark-purple late-season color and bold architectural presence are the design priority.

  • Intensely Saturated All-Dark-Purple Velvety Spikes — Richly uniform deep dark purple flowers and calyces create one of the deepest, most saturated, and most visually dramatic flower color displays available in any late-season ornamental perennial — a true jewel-toned showstopper.
  • Spectacular Late-Season Bloom Timing — Blooms most prolifically from late summer through fall when most other perennials have finished, delivering unmatched dark-purple color drama during the most valuable and underserved late-season garden and landscape period.
  • Bold Architectural Specimen Presence — Large, vigorous habit with dramatically arching velvety all-dark-purple flower spikes creates an unmatched bold architectural focal point in mixed perennial borders, hummingbird gardens, and large landscape beds throughout the fall season.
  • Premier Hummingbird & Butterfly Magnet — Deep dark purple velvety flower spikes are outstanding attractors for hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, bumblebees, and native bees during the critical late-season foraging period when nectar and pollen sources are most scarce.
  • Exceptional Drought & Heat Tolerance — Develops strong drought resistance once established, thriving with minimal supplemental irrigation through the most intense summer heat — essential for water-wise, fire-resistant, and Mediterranean-style organic landscape designs.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun (6–8 hours daily) with excellent drainage — plant in well-drained soil and water moderately until established, after which minimal supplemental irrigation is needed. Hardy in USDA zones 8–11, growing 3–5' tall with a spread of 3–4'. Velvety all-dark-purple flower spikes bloom late summer through fall (August–November); trim back by one-half in early spring to encourage a vigorous, well-branched habit and prolific spectacular late-season blooming throughout the season.
