Barbecue Rosemary grows unusually straight and upright — narrow evergreen columns of dark, needlelike foliage that give off a resinous, piney scent whenever a sleeve brushes past. Rosmarinus officinalis 'Barbecue' arrives as a live 4-inch plant.

That narrow, sturdy form is easy to place: a sunny patio pot, a piece of structure in a kitchen-garden bed, or a row of plants clipped into a low informal hedge along a walk. It wants full sun, lean fast-draining soil, and very little water once rooted. Small blue-purple flowers open along the stems and bring pollinators in close.

Grower's note: trim lightly after flowering and never cut back into old bare wood, which rarely breaks again. Add grit at planting wherever your ground holds winter wet — that is the one thing this plant will not forgive.
