Organic Beach Strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) is a rugged and beautiful evergreen groundcover native to the Pacific coastlines. Often called the Coastal Strawberry, this versatile perennial is one of the two original parents of the modern garden strawberry. It is highly prized for its tough, leathery, deep green foliage that features a brilliant glossy sheen, creating a lush "carpet" that stays attractive year-round.
As a robust member of the Fragaria genus, the Beach Strawberry is a champion of low-maintenance landscaping. It spreads quickly via red-tinted runners (stolons), making it an excellent "living mulch" for stabilizing slopes, filling parkways, or acting as a drought-tolerant lawn alternative. In spring, it is blanketed with charming white flowers that provide a vital nectar source for native bees and butterflies. While it is often grown ornamentally for its weed-suppressing habit and salt tolerance, it does produce small, seedy red fruits with a sweet, delicate flavor that are a favorite of local songbirds. This established 4" plant is exceptionally resilient, thriving in sandy soils and coastal winds where other groundcovers might falter.
Why you’ll love it:
- Evergreen Groundcover: Maintains its rich, glossy green color through the winter, often taking on attractive reddish tints in cold weather.
- Salt & Drought Tolerant: Naturally adapted to coastal dunes; thrives in sandy soil and stands up to salt spray and wind.
- Pollinator & Bird Magnet: Showy white spring blooms attract butterflies, while the autumn berries provide food for birds.
- Lawn Alternative: Its low-growing, mat-forming habit can handle light foot traffic and effectively suppresses weeds.
- Erosion Control: Fast-spreading runners create a strong root network, making it ideal for banks and seaside hillsides.
This healthy 4" live plant thrives in full sun to partial shade. It reaches a mature height of 4–8" and spreads indefinitely via runners, preferring well-drained soil.
