Mediterranean White Darley Heath covers itself in pure white bells while most of the garden is still asleep, each one carried on a rounded mound of fine, needle-like evergreen foliage. Erica × darleyensis arrives as a live 4-inch plant.

Winter into spring is its season, which makes it valuable in exactly the months when little else is doing much: along a walk, over a bank, at the front of a bed, or in a patio container by the door. It knits into a low evergreen ground cover, shrugs off deer, and feeds the first insects out on a mild day. Full sun or light shade both work. Keep it lightly moist while it settles in, then let it drain freely.

Fun fact: The hybrid takes its name from Darley Dale in Derbyshire, England, where this cross between two heaths first appeared in a nursery more than a century ago.
