Encelia californica (Encelia californica), affectionately known as Bush Sunflower, is a cheerful, sun-loving California native shrub that delivers a generous, season-long display of bright golden-yellow daisy flowers with striking dark brown to nearly black central discs — a vivid, high-contrast combination that radiates warmth, wildflower authenticity, and genuine ecological richness from every bloom. Native to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of Southern California and Baja, this fast-growing, informally rounded shrub blooms prolifically from late winter through spring and into early summer, clothing itself in cheerful yellow daisies that attract native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects with remarkable and ecologically critical reliability. The aromatic, soft gray-green foliage contributes a pleasant resinous herbal fragrance that adds a sensory dimension beyond the plant's already compelling visual and ecological presence.

This professional-grade 4" plant arrives with a healthy, well-established root system cultivated through professional horticultural practices — ready to grow quickly and begin flowering. Bush Sunflower thrives in full sun with well-drained to dry, lean soil — performing at its finest in coastal gardens, native plant borders, dry hillside designs, wildlife gardens, and Mediterranean-style landscapes where its loose, informal, wildflower character can express itself with natural freedom. Fast-growing and vigorously self-sufficient once established, it fills in quickly to create a bold, naturalistic presence in the landscape while requiring remarkably little care or supplemental resources in return.

  • Prolific Golden-Yellow Daisy Blooms: Bright golden-yellow daisy flowers with vivid dark centers are produced in generous abundance from late winter through spring and into early summer — delivering one of the longest and most cheerful California native wildflower displays available, brightening the garden at precisely the moment the season is building toward its peak.
  • Critical Native Bee & Butterfly Resource: A vital nectar and pollen source for native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects throughout its long bloom season — one of the most ecologically important flowering native shrubs available for habitat-supporting California garden designs that prioritize local wildlife and biodiversity.
  • Fast-Growing & Vigorous: Establishes and fills in rapidly to create a bold, rounded, naturalistic presence in the landscape — delivering full-sized garden impact and generous flower production in a fraction of the time required by slower-growing native shrubs.
  • Aromatic Gray-Green Foliage: The resinous, pleasantly fragrant soft gray-green leaves add sensory richness, textural contrast, and a distinctly California coastal character to mixed native plantings — and contribute directly to the plant's outstanding drought resilience once established.
  • Exceptional Drought & Coastal Tolerance: Thrives in the heat, seasonal drought, salt air, and challenging soils of coastal and inland California gardens — a tough, adaptable, ecologically generous native performer that delivers maximum color and wildlife value with minimal supplemental resources.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun (6+ hours daily) with well-drained to dry, lean soil; avoid rich soil, heavy clay, and summer overhead irrigation once established. Water regularly during the first season to establish strong roots, then transition to minimal to no supplemental summer irrigation. USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11; mature height: 3–5 feet; spread: 3–5 feet. Bloom time: late winter through early summer. Cut back by one-third after the main bloom flush to encourage fresh growth and a tidy, well-branched form through the remainder of the season.
