Crazy Fortune Giant Hyssop arrives as a live 4-inch plant already worth looking at: green leaves rimmed in creamy white, bright for weeks before the first flower opens. Then upright purple spikes rise above the variegation and keep coming from summer into early fall.

Give Agastache rugosa 'Crazy Fortune' a sunny border or a roomy container with sharp drainage and it will hold the middle of the planting all season. Bees and butterflies work the spikes steadily, the stems cut well for a loose late-summer arrangement, and brushing past the foliage releases a clean sweet scent. Snip spent spikes and new ones follow.

Fun fact: Agastache sits in the mint family, which is why the stems are square in cross-section — roll one between your fingers and you can feel all four corners.
