Coronation Gold Fernleaf Yarrow is a live 4-inch plant that grows into wide, flat plates of mustard gold held dead level above fern-fine silver-green foliage. Achillea 'Coronation Gold' stands 2 to 4 feet on stems stiff enough to skip the staking.

Give it full sun and room in the middle of a border, where those horizontal gold discs cut against spires, grasses and round daisy faces — and give bees an easy landing pad. It shrugs off heat and dry spells once settled, deer leave it alone, and the heads cut cleanly for arrangements, holding their color as they dry.

Fun fact: the old common name Milfoil comes straight from the Latin mille-folium, thousand leaves. Look closely at that dissected foliage and the count starts to seem modest.
