Red St. John's Wort earns its keep twice: bright yellow flowers through summer, then glossy red berries that hold on the stem for weeks. Hypericum × inodorum Magic Marbles Red arrives as a live 4-inch plant and fills out into a tidy, rounded shrub.

Those berried stems are a florist staple, and here you can cut your own — they are the piece that makes an autumn arrangement look finished. In the garden it reads as a neat mound for a mixed border or a large patio container, in full sun or a few hours of shade, in soil that stays moist but drains. The berries are strictly for looking at, not for eating.

Fun fact: the name is a calendar. Hypericum traditionally opens its yellow flowers around St. John's Day in late June, which is how the whole group came by its common name.
