Everett's Choice California Fuchsia spends most of the year as a low, broad cover of fuzzy gray-green leaves, then lights up in late summer with scarlet to orange-red tubular flowers that carry on into fall. Epilobium canum var. latifolium 'Everett's Choice' ships as a live 4-inch plant.

This is the California native that solves the hot, bare edge: a rock garden ledge, the lip of a dry border, the gravel strip that bakes from noon onward. Its spreading growth closes over open soil, and settled plants want almost nothing in the way of summer water. Full sun or a little afternoon shade and well-drained ground are the whole list. Cut the stems back in late fall and it returns compact in spring.

Fun fact: Those narrow scarlet tubes are shaped for hummingbird bills, and they open just as the birds are fueling for migration, which is why this plant is often the busiest thing in a September garden.
