Growth Timeline

  • Growing Season: Most fruits/veggies have their peak growing season starting in spring and extending through fall. They need a runway of consecutive warm days and nights (from 60-90) to produce fruit.
  • First Harvest: Fruits/veggies take 2-3 months to bear fruit and/or reach ripeness.
  • Final Harvest: Fruits/veggies start to give out between late summer and early fall in most climates. Some plants, such as strawberries, will become dormant in winter before popping back into action in for spring, but most fruiting plants will need to be replaced after their season is over.

Support Trailing Plants: Unless you are growing smaller plants (jalapeño or micro-tomatoes) you might want to use stakes, trellises, or cages to support the plants as they grow. This will prevent them from sprawling on the ground. Train the vines to grow vertically for better air circulation and easier harvesting.

Eggplant 'Ping Tung Long' (Solanum melongena 'Ping Tung Long') is a stunning, high-value Asian eggplant variety originating from Ping Tung County in Taiwan, prized by chefs, market growers, and home gardeners worldwide for its extraordinary combination of exceptional flavor, refined flesh texture, and genuine ornamental beauty in the kitchen garden. The long, slender, elegantly curved fruits are a luminous lavender-purple with a glossy, almost lacquered skin of exceptional visual appeal — beautiful both growing on the plant and displayed in the kitchen. 'Ping Tung Long' is celebrated for its sweet, remarkably tender flesh with minimal bitterness and a very small seed cavity — the precise qualities that make premium Asian eggplant varieties so prized in professional kitchens and among serious home cooks who understand the meaningful difference between a mediocre and an outstanding eggplant.

This professional-grade 4" organic seedling has been cultivated through certified organic practices and arrives with a healthy, well-established root system ready to transplant into the warm-season garden with confidence. 'Ping Tung Long' is an outstanding performer in raised beds, in-ground vegetable gardens, and large containers in full sun — thriving vigorously in the heat of summer and producing an abundant, extended harvest of beautiful slender fruits from midsummer through fall. Its vigorous, upright plant habit and stunning lavender-purple fruits make it a genuinely decorative addition to the kitchen garden as well as one of its most productive and culinarily rewarding crops of the warm season.

  • Exceptional Sweet, Tender, Low-Bitterness Flavor: Long, slender fruits deliver a sweet, mild, remarkably tender flavor with minimal bitterness and a very small seed cavity — the hallmark of premium Asian eggplant quality that makes 'Ping Tung Long' a prized choice among professional chefs and discerning home cooks for any application from grilling to stir-frying.
  • Stunning Ornamental Lavender-Purple Fruits: Elegantly long, slender, luminously lavender-purple fruits with a beautiful glossy skin are as visually exquisite in the kitchen garden as they are on the plate — adding genuine ornamental beauty and visual interest throughout the entire harvest season.
  • Certified Organic Root System: Grown through certified organic practices, this transplant arrives with a strong, well-developed root system that establishes quickly in warm, fertile soil and begins growing vigorously — setting the stage for an abundant, extended summer and fall harvest of premium-quality fruits.
  • Prolific, Extended Harvest Season: Produces an abundant, continuous succession of beautiful fruits from midsummer through fall on vigorous, upright plants — one of the most productive and generously yielding Asian eggplant varieties available for the home and market garden throughout the warm season.
  • Exceptional Culinary Versatility: The sweet, tender, low-bitterness flesh excels grilled, roasted, stir-fried, braised, and prepared fresh — its refined flavor and delicate texture make it equally at home in Asian, Mediterranean, and modern fusion cuisine for a kitchen crop of truly extraordinary versatility.

These 4" organic seedlings thrive in full sun (8+ hours daily) with fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture. Eggplant is a heat-loving crop — transplant outdoors only after the last frost date when soil temperatures have warmed to at least 60°F and nighttime temperatures remain reliably above 55°F. Days to maturity: approximately 65–70 days from transplant. Harvest fruits when skin is glossy and fruit has reached its characteristic slender length of 12–18 inches — do not allow to over-ripen on the plant as flavor and texture decline. In cooler climates, use row cover or black plastic mulch to warm soil and extend the productive season. Mature plant height: 24–36 inches.

We take great care to ensure our seedlings are healthy and well-established before they’re shipped. We pre-germinate the organic seeds and grow them up to 12 weeks before shipping them as mature plants ready for transplant. Seedlings typically arrive within 1-4 days.
