Penstemon, also called beardtongue, is a hummingbird magnet and one of the best perennials for sunny, well-drained gardens. Its tall spikes of tubular flowers come in scarlet, deep burgundy, purple, and sky blue, blooming from late spring through summer. Many varieties are native to the American West and are exceptionally drought-tolerant once established. Penstemon brings vertical structure and long-season color to borders, pollinator gardens, rock gardens, and water-wise plantings.
