Muhly grasses (Muhlenbergia) are tough, warm-season bunchgrasses native to North America. They range from mid-size clumps with airy, colorful fall plumes to large, fountain-shaped grasses like deer grass, a staple of California native and water-wise gardens. Muhlys like full sun and well-drained soil, tolerate heat and drought once established, and add movement to borders, slopes, and mass plantings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Deer grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) is a warm-season bunchgrass in the muhly genus, native from California to Texas and Mexico. It reaches about 5 feet tall in bloom, and California Native American tribes use its flower stalks to weave coiled baskets. Muhlys are warm-season grasses that do most of their growing in summer heat. Many send up airy flower plumes from late summer into fall, and the plumes often stay attractive after they dry. Full sun and good drainage. Muhlys tolerate poor, rocky, or sandy soil and handle heat and drought once established. Muhlys need little care. Larger bunchgrasses like deer grass only need cutting back every few years, in fall after they set seed, and they don't need fertilizer. We stand behind every plant we ship.
