About this Plant

Sericea Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia sericea, syn. M. filipes, M. capillaris var. filipes) is a breathtaking ornamental grass native to the coastal plains and sandy soils of the southeastern United States, celebrated for its spectacular fall display of airy, reddish-purple flower plumes that age to soft pink and shimmer above a graceful mound of fine blue-green foliage. Often confused with the more common Muhlenbergia capillaris, sericea is a distinct and finer-textured species that produces even more delicate, cloud-like plumes in a richer, more saturated reddish-purple hue — creating one of the most stunning and ethereal grass displays available for the ornamental garden. From late summer through fall, the plant transforms into a luminous haze of color that catches the light magnificently at sunrise and sunset.

These Professional Grade 4" plants are grown to the highest nursery standards, producing well-developed root systems that establish quickly and perform reliably in a wide range of garden conditions. Sericea Muhly Grass thrives in full sun with well-drained to dry soil and is exceptionally tolerant of heat, drought, coastal salt spray, and poor soils — making it one of the most adaptable and low-maintenance ornamental grasses for warm-climate gardens. It performs beautifully in mixed borders, mass plantings, coastal gardens, and naturalistic landscape designs.

  • Spectacular Reddish-Purple Fall Plumes: Among the most breathtaking ornamental grass displays available — airy, cloud-like reddish-purple flower plumes age to soft pink and shimmer magnificently in autumn light from late summer through fall.
  • Fine Blue-Green Foliage Year-Round: Delicate, fine-textured blue-green foliage forms an elegant, graceful mound that provides attractive structure and soft texture in the garden throughout all seasons.
  • Exceptional Heat & Drought Tolerance: Once established, thrives in hot, dry conditions with minimal supplemental irrigation — a standout performer in low-water, water-wise, and xeriscape garden designs.
  • Coastal & Salt Tolerant: Outstanding tolerance for coastal conditions including salt spray, sandy soils, and sea winds — an ideal ornamental grass for coastal and seaside gardens.
  • Outstanding in Mass Plantings: When planted in groups or sweeps, Sericea Muhly creates a breathtaking sea of reddish-purple haze that becomes one of the most memorable landscape moments of the autumn garden.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun with well-drained to dry, sandy, or lean soil. Water regularly until established, then reduce to occasional deep watering. Hardy in USDA Zones 7–11; mature height 2–3 feet with a spread of 2–3 feet. Flower plumes appear late summer through fall (September–November). Cut back to the ground in late winter before new growth emerges. Excellent for mixed borders, mass plantings, coastal gardens, and naturalistic landscape designs.
