This 4" healthy live plant thrives in full sun with low to moderate water and excellent drainage — Midnight Penstemon is highly susceptible to root rot in consistently wet or poorly drained soils, particularly in winter. A cold-hardy perennial suited to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9, it returns reliably each spring and benefits from a light cutback after the main bloom flush to encourage reblooming. Mature height reaches 18–24 inches with a spread of 18–24 inches. Primary bloom time runs from early to midsummer (June–August). Excellent drainage is the single most important factor for long-term success with penstemons.
