About this Plant

Munstead English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead') is one of the most beloved and widely grown lavender cultivars in the world — a compact, early-blooming perennial shrub producing an abundance of deep lavender-blue flower spikes above a neat, dense mound of aromatic silver-green foliage. Named after the famous Munstead Wood garden of legendary garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, this timeless cultivar is celebrated for its compact, well-mannered habit, exceptional cold hardiness, intense fragrance, and prolific early bloom season that makes it one of the most reliable and rewarding lavenders available for organic gardens in a wide range of climates.

Grown from certified organic heritage stock, each plant arrives with a Professional Grade root system — dense, fibrous, and fully established for strong, vigorous first-season performance. Munstead thrives in full sun with excellent drainage and is highly drought tolerant once established, excelling in water-wise, Mediterranean-style, fire-resistant, and low-maintenance organic landscapes. Its compact, tidy habit makes it outstanding as a border edging plant, container specimen, mass planting, fragrant pathway edging, and pollinator garden anchor — while its early, fragrant blooms are equally prized for fresh cutting, dried arrangements, culinary use, and therapeutic sachets.

  • Exceptional Cold Hardiness — One of the hardiest English lavender cultivars available, Munstead performs reliably through cold winters across a wide hardiness range, making it the go-to choice for gardeners in challenging cool climates.
  • Early Season Deep Lavender Blooms — Produces deep lavender-blue flower spikes earlier in the season than many other cultivars, extending the garden's fragrance and pollinator season from late spring onward.
  • Premier Pollinator Magnet — Deep lavender flower spikes are exceptional attractors for honeybees, bumblebees, native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects — an essential anchor for any organic pollinator or bee garden.
  • Compact Border & Container Habit — Well-mannered, compact mounding form stays tidy and refined, making Munstead ideal for pathway edging, low hedges, container specimens, rock gardens, and front-of-border placements.
  • Multi-Purpose Fragrant Herb — Intensely fragrant flower spikes are prized for fresh and dried cutting, culinary use in baked goods and infusions, herbal sachets, and soothing aromatherapy applications throughout the season.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun (6–8 hours daily) with excellent drainage — plant in well-drained to sandy or gravelly soil and water moderately until established, after which minimal supplemental irrigation is needed. Hardy in USDA zones 5–8, growing 12–18" tall with a spread of 18–24". Deep lavender-blue flower spikes bloom in late spring to early summer (May–July); shear by one-third immediately after peak bloom to encourage a compact form and potential second flush of flowers in late summer or early fall.
