Dalmatian Purple Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Purple') is a compact, early-blooming foxglove selection celebrated for its large, densely packed spikes of rich purple trumpet flowers adorned with contrasting spotted throats in white and deep burgundy. The Dalmatian series was bred for a dramatically more compact habit than traditional foxglove, allowing it to fit gracefully into smaller garden spaces and mixed container arrangements while delivering the full visual impact of its tall heirloom cousins. This biennial-to-short-lived-perennial blooms in its first year from an early start — a significant advantage over standard foxgloves, which often require a full growing season before flowering.

Grown from Professional Grade root systems, Dalmatian Purple Foxglove is essential in cottage, woodland, shade, and pollinator garden designs. Its towering flower spikes are a premier nectar source for bumblebees, which are the primary pollinators of foxglove and perfectly sized to fit inside the tubular blooms. Pair it with roses, geraniums, and Alchemilla for a classic cottage border, or combine with ferns and hostas for an elegant shaded woodland planting.

Why You'll Love It

  • Rich Purple Spotted Trumpet Flowers: Densely packed spikes of large, deep purple tubular flowers with dramatically speckled throats create a lush, jewel-toned vertical accent that defines the cottage and woodland garden aesthetic.
  • First-Year Blooming Advantage: Unlike standard foxgloves that wait a full season, Dalmatian Purple blooms in its first year from an early-season transplant — delivering the full impact of foxglove without the wait.
  • Compact Dalmatian Habit: Bred for a shorter, more compact stature than traditional foxglove, making it manageable in smaller borders, raised beds, and mixed container plantings without sacrificing flower-spike drama.
  • Premier Pollinator Plant: Tubular blooms are perfectly sized for bumblebees — one of the most important native pollinators — and provide a critical nectar source during the late spring and early summer bloom period.
  • Cottage & Woodland Garden Essential: The quintessential vertical accent for cottage borders, shaded woodland clearings, and naturalistic garden designs — pairs beautifully with roses, Alchemilla, ferns, and hostas.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun to part shade in moist, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Consistent moisture is important — avoid prolonged drought, especially during active growth and bloom. Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 4–9. Behaves as a biennial or short-lived perennial; blooms in the first year when started early. Mature bloom height: 24–36 inches; spread: 12–18 inches. Blooms late spring to early summer. Allow some seed heads to mature and self-sow for naturalized colonies that return reliably year after year. Note: all parts of Digitalis are toxic if ingested — plant thoughtfully in gardens frequented by children or pets.
