About this Plant
Yankee Point Ceanothus (Ceanothus griseus var. horizontalis 'Yankee Point') is one of the most beloved and widely planted California native groundcovers, treasured for its sweeping, low-spreading habit and breathtaking spring flush of medium blue flower clusters that transform slopes and garden beds into a sea of blue. Selected from the coastal scrub of the Carmel Highlands, 'Yankee Point' is faster-growing and more vigorous than many Ceanothus selections, quickly forming a lush, dense carpet of rich evergreen foliage that suppresses weeds and stabilizes soil with ease. Its combination of fast establishment, stunning bloom display, and rugged drought tolerance has made it a staple of California native horticulture for decades.
These Professional Grade 4" plants are grown to the highest nursery standards, producing vigorous root systems that establish readily and spread quickly across slopes, banks, and open landscape areas. Yankee Point Ceanothus performs best in full sun with excellent drainage and thrives on the natural rainfall patterns of California and the Pacific Coast once established. It is an outstanding choice for large-scale native plantings, fire-wise landscapes, and wildlife habitat gardens.
- Sweeping Medium Blue Spring Blooms: Masses of vibrant medium blue flower clusters cover the plant in a breathtaking display from late winter through spring, one of the finest native bloom shows in western horticulture.
- Fast-Growing, Vigorous Groundcover: One of the most vigorous Ceanothus groundcover selections, spreading quickly to fill slopes, banks, and open areas with dense, weed-suppressing evergreen foliage.
- Exceptional Drought Tolerance: A true California native adapted to summer drought; thrives with little to no supplemental irrigation once established, making it ideal for water-wise landscapes.
- Vital Pollinator & Wildlife Plant: Flowers are a rich nectar source for native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds; dense foliage provides nesting cover and habitat for birds and beneficial insects.
- Erosion Control & Fire-Wise: Deep, spreading root system effectively stabilizes slopes and erosion-prone banks; low water needs and dense habit support fire-wise landscape design.
These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun to light shade with fast-draining, well-aerated soil. Water regularly during the first season to establish, then taper to little or no supplemental irrigation. Hardy in USDA Zones 8–10; mature height 2–3 feet with a spread of 8–10 feet. Bloom time is late winter to mid-spring (February–April). Avoid summer watering once established. An outstanding choice for slopes, native gardens, and large-scale groundcover plantings.
