Monch Frikart's Aster opens lavender-blue daisies with yellow centers, each two to three inches across, from summer well into fall. The upright plant ranges from one to three feet tall, giving a long season of cool color to the middle of a border.

Use it in a border, a rock garden or a cutting garden; the long season makes it a steady source of flowers for the vase. Plant it in full sun or partial shade and keep the soil evenly moist. It is deciduous, dying back in winter and returning in spring, and deer generally leave it alone.

Design note: Its cool lavender-blue is a natural partner for yellow and gold flowers, such as coreopsis and black-eyed Susans, which echo its yellow centers.
