Here's the Heritage Story:
Originally from high-altitude, tropical South America and is closely related to the tomatillo, but with a flavor of pineapple, vanilla and occasionally butterscotch. A widely traveled fruit, it was introduced to England and South Africa in the late 18th Century as well as Australia, New Zealand, and various Pacific islands.
Plant Specifications:
Harvest the fruits when they are fully ripe, which is indicated by their golden-yellow color and a slightly soft texture.
Make sure to plant in nutrient dense soil, especially optimized for growing fruiting plants. You can purchase our magic organic soil and organic soil boosters (micro and macro nutrients in the form of marine-based fertilizers, worm castings, and beneficial fungi) specifically curated for fruiting plants to help improve your soil.
Growth Timeline
Growth Timeline
- Growing Season: Most fruiting plants have their peak growing season starting in Spring and extending through Fall. They need a runway of consecutive warm days and nights (from 60-90) to produce fruit.
- First Harvest: Fruiting plants take 2-3 months to bear fruit and reach ripeness.
- Final Harvest: Fruiting plants start to give out between late summer and early fall in most climates. Some plants, such as strawberries, will become dormant in winter before popping back into action in for spring, but most fruiting plants will need to be replaced after their season is over.
Growing Zone
Growing Zone
Most fruiting plants prefer warmer temperatures and will be dormant or grow very slowly in colder climates. Refer to the following guidelines concerning extreme weather:
COLD CLIMATES
- Fruiting plants require nighttime temperatures to consistently be in the 50s or above to survive.
WARM CLIMATES:
- Fruiting plants are made for the heat and will do fine with temperatures above 90 degrees.

- Best Planted Wall Placement: Smaller fruiting plants, like micro-tomatoes and jalapeños, should be placed near the top so you can maximize light exposure and warmth. Larger fruiting plants are intended to be grown in larger pots.
- Support: Unless you are growing smaller plants (jalapeño or micro-tomatoes) you should use stakes, trellises, or cages to support the plants as they grow. This will prevent them from sprawling on the ground. Train the vines to grow vertically for better air circulation and easier harvesting.
