Peruvian Feather Grass (Stipa ichu) is a supremely graceful, fine-textured ornamental grass that brings an almost meditative sense of movement and lightness to the garden with its long, arching, hair-fine silver-green foliage and its extraordinary, airy flower plumes. In late spring and summer, slender flower stems rise above the tightly arching foliage clump bearing feathery, silver-white seed plumes that shimmer and sway in the slightest breeze — catching the light with a luminous, gossamer quality that is among the most beautiful effects in the ornamental grass world. The entire plant seems to breathe and shimmer with every passing air current, creating a constant, gentle animated presence in the garden.

Cultivated from Professional Grade root systems, Peruvian Feather Grass is a refined, drought-tolerant performer for dry Mediterranean borders, xeriscape gardens, gravel gardens, and naturalistic landscape designs where its airy, wispy texture provides a beautiful softening counterpoint to bolder, more structured companion plants. Its luminous plumes pair magnificently with deep-colored companions including Salvia, Echinacea, Kniphofia, and Agapanthus, and its fine texture makes it an exceptional foil for bold architectural succulents and ornamental foliage plants. Exceptionally deer-resistant and non-invasive in California and Pacific Coast gardens.

Why You'll Love It

  • Luminous Shimmering Feather Plumes: Silver-white feathery seed plumes catch sunlight and sway in the breeze with a gossamer, almost ethereal luminosity — one of the most beautiful light-catching effects achievable with any ornamental grass in the garden.
  • Constant Gentle Garden Movement: Hair-fine foliage and feather plumes respond to the subtlest air currents with graceful, animated movement — bringing a meditative, living quality to the garden that rigid structural plants cannot replicate.
  • Exceptional Drought & Heat Tolerance: Thrives in lean, dry conditions with minimal supplemental irrigation once established — a top-tier performer for xeriscape, gravel garden, Mediterranean, and low-water landscape designs.
  • Versatile Softening Companion: Fine, airy texture creates a beautiful veil-like softening effect around bold-structured companions including ornamental salvias, succulents, Agapanthus, and Echinacea — an essential textural bridge in mixed planting compositions.
  • Non-Invasive Well-Behaved Clumper: Forms tidy, well-mannered clumps that do not spread aggressively or self-seed problematically — a responsible, garden-friendly ornamental grass choice for California and Pacific Coast garden landscapes.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun in well-draining, lean to moderately fertile soil. Excellent drainage is important — Stipa ichu dislikes wet, heavy clay soils and prolonged winter moisture. Water consistently during the first season to establish roots, then reduce to low, infrequent irrigation. Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 7–11. Mature foliage height: 18–24 inches; flower plume height: 30–36 inches; clump spread: 18–24 inches. Feather plumes appear late spring through summer. Comb out any dead interior foliage and trim lightly in early spring before new growth begins; avoid hard shearing, which can damage the crown.
