Chris Hunter Salvia forms a tight mound of small, serrated green leaves and covers it with peachy-orange flowers from spring into fall. In time it fills out into a rounded shrub a couple of feet tall and wide.

Give it a sunny spot in a border, a dry garden or a large container, water moderately, and let the soil dry between waterings; it is drought resistant once established, and deer tend to avoid it. Bees and butterflies visit all season, and hummingbirds are drawn to the tubular flowers. The soft, warm color sits easily beside blues and purples.

Fun fact: It came from The Plant Barn in Chico, California, and its breeder believes it is probably a cross between Salvia darcyi and Salvia × jamensis.
