Coarse Leaved Tuscan Blue grows straight up rather than out — a narrow evergreen column of broad, deep green needles that stay aromatic in every season, lit from late winter into spring by clear blue flowers. This is a live 4-inch plant of Rosmarinus officinalis 'Tuscan Blue', coarse-leaf form.

The columnar habit is what makes it useful: it gives vertical structure in a gravel garden, a dry border, or a large terracotta pot without spreading into its neighbors, and a row of them makes an informal, fragrant hedge. Bees find the blue flowers early. Brush past and the whole planting perfumes the air. Give it sun and very sharp drainage, then trim after the spring flush without cutting into old wood.

Fun fact: The old genus name is a compound of the Latin ros and marinus, dew of the sea — a nod to the sea-facing Mediterranean hillsides where it grows wild.
