Fantasy Purple Bicolor Summer Phlox is a live 4-inch plant that opens rounded domes of violet, every floret marked with a white flare and a hot-pink eye. Phlox paniculata carries them on an upright, compact clump that holds its shape without staking — and they are fragrant.

Scent is the reason to put it where people pass: a path edge, a seating area, a doorway pot. Cut flowers are the reason to plant three. The clusters last well in a vase, butterflies work them all summer, and the columnar habit slots between shrubs without sprawling. Even moisture, good drainage and air moving around the clump keep the foliage clean.

Fun fact: each floret is a long narrow tube with a flat face, a shape built for butterflies and hawkmoths — their tongues reach nectar that most bees simply cannot.
