Pesto Perpetuo Basil rises in a tall, upright column of green-and-cream variegated leaves. It rarely flowers, so instead of going to seed it keeps putting out fresh leaves, and the plant stays full and tidy from top to bottom.

That narrow shape and pale variegation make it a striking accent in a pot, at the corner of a raised bed, or along a sunny border, and the aromatic leaves release their scent when brushed. It also adds height and a cool, pale note to mixed containers of flowering annuals. Grow it in full sun with moderate watering. It is an annual or short-lived perennial, carrying on through winter only where frosts are rare.

Grower's note: Pinch the tips now and then to keep the column dense; because it so rarely blooms, there is almost no deadheading to do.
