Growing Zone

Garnet Giant Mustard Greens grows best in zones 6, 7, 8, and 9, but may do well outside that range as well.

Most leafy greens like the cooler temperatures, but they can generally grow year-round. You want to be aware of the extreme temperature ranges in your region. Refer to the guidelines below:

COLD CLIMATES

  • If you live in a location where the temperatures dip below freezing, hold off on growing until night temperatures are consistently in the 40's.
  • On the occasional dips into the 30's, you can cover your seedlings with a sheet overnight.

WARM CLIMATES:

  • If you regularly experience temperatures above 90 degrees for long periods of time, you may want to focus on herbs and heat-tolerant fruiting plants (tomatoes and peppers) during the heat intensive months.
  • Once temperatures are consistently in the 80's, you can start growing leafy greens.

To find out what extreme temperatures your location experiences, check out the USDA zone for your region.

About this plant

Garnet Giant Mustard is a certified organic live 2-inch starter plant with oversized deep maroon leaves rising from vivid lime-green stems. The contrast is strong enough that it earns a place in a flower border as readily as a vegetable bed.

It is quick and generous: cut baby leaves at about 20 days for a peppery lift in salad, or let it run to roughly 45 days for full-size leaves to braise or stir-fry. The heat is sweeter and rounder than ordinary mustard — closer to a gentle horseradish than a sting. Leaves, stems and flowers are all edible, and the color deepens as the weather cools.

Grower's note: the purple pigment is sun-driven. A plant in full sun colors up dark and glossy, while one in shade drifts back toward bronze-green.

  • Sunlight: Full Sun (6+ hrs)
  • Water: Keep moist
  • Mature Size: 1'–2' tall × 6"-12" wide
  • Harvest Season: Spring, Fall
  • Lifespan: Annual
  • Hardiness Zones: 6–9
  • Resistance: Pest Resistant (General)
