Silver Squill is a little bulb grown for its leaves: fleshy, pointed blades mottled in silver and olive green, with deep violet undersides. In spring it sends up dense clusters of tiny green flowers edged in white, with purple stamens.

Native to South Africa, it is a favorite of cactus and succulent growers and an evergreen houseplant. Outdoors in mild climates it handles dry shade, spreading into a small-scale ground cover, filling cracks in a wall, or edging a container. Let the soil dry between waterings; it is drought tolerant. Indoors, give it bright light to keep the leaves well marked; its small size suits a windowsill or desk.

Design note: Its silver-and-violet coloring stands out in a shallow bowl, or among succulents in a mixed dish garden.
