About this Plant

Whirling Butterflies Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri 'Whirling Butterflies', syn. Oenothera lindheimeri) is a graceful, airy perennial beloved for its cloud of delicate white flowers that age to soft rose-pink, dancing on tall, wiry stems that sway and shimmer with every breeze — evoking the fluttering wings of a cloud of butterflies in motion. Native to the prairies and meadows of Louisiana and Texas, this elegant wildflower brings natural, effortless beauty to the garden with a long bloom season that stretches from late spring through fall. The narrow, lance-shaped foliage often develops attractive reddish-bronze tints in sun or cool weather, adding a subtle seasonal color change to its many ornamental qualities.

These Professional Grade 4" plants are grown to the highest nursery standards, producing deep, well-developed root systems that anchor firmly and establish quickly in sunny, well-drained locations. Whirling Butterflies Gaura is highly adaptable to a wide range of conditions including heat, drought, humidity, and coastal exposure. Its tall, airy habit adds movement and lightness to mixed borders, meadow-inspired plantings, and naturalistic garden designs — an invaluable filler and companion plant that enhances everything planted around it.

  • White-to-Pink Dancing Blooms All Season: Delicate white flowers age to soft rose-pink, both colors present simultaneously on arching wands that dance gracefully in the breeze from late spring through fall.
  • Exceptional Airy Texture & Movement: Tall, wiry stems and feather-light blooms create a unique sense of movement and lightness in the garden — a natural companion for grasses, salvias, and bold-leaved perennials.
  • Heat, Drought & Humidity Tolerant: Native to the hot, dry prairies of the South, Whirling Butterflies thrives in heat and dry conditions once established, making it an outstanding performer in low-water and water-wise landscapes.
  • Attracts Butterflies & Native Bees: The delicate pink-tinted flowers are a reliable nectar source for butterflies, native bees, and hummingbirds throughout the extended bloom season.
  • Long-Lived & Low Maintenance: A deep taproot makes established plants exceptionally drought resilient and long-lived; requires minimal deadheading or ongoing care once settled into a sunny, well-drained position.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun with well-drained to dry soil. Water regularly until established, then reduce to occasional deep watering. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9; mature height 3–4 feet with a spread of 2–3 feet. Blooms late spring through fall (May–October). Cut back by one-third in midsummer if plants become floppy to encourage a fresh flush of compact growth and continued blooming. Excellent for mixed borders, meadow gardens, and naturalistic plantings.
