Golden Carpet Escallonia pushes butter-yellow new leaves each spring that mature to a fresh lime green, then hangs small red flowers against them in summer — a two-color trick on one low, rounded evergreen mound. It ships as a live 4-inch plant.

Escallonia 'Golden Carpet' stays small enough for the places big shrubs ruin: the edge of a patio, the front of a mixed border, a container by the door, or a short slope that needs covering. Because the leaves are evergreen, the planting still reads as full long after the flowers finish, which is most of the year.

Design note: Set it against something dark — deep green conifers, burgundy foliage, a charcoal fence — so the yellow new growth reads as deliberate light rather than a hungry plant.
