Kramer's Red Darley Heath is a live 4-inch plant that does its best work in the dead of winter, when deep magenta bells open in ranks along a low evergreen mound of dark bronze-green foliage.

Erica x darleyensis 'Kramer's Red' spreads into a dense mat, which makes it a genuinely useful ground cover for a slope, a path edge, or the front of a shrub border — and a fine winter patio pot besides. The flowers run from winter into spring, feeding the first bees out of the hive when almost nothing else is open. Give it full sun and drainage it can count on, and shear the faded tips just after bloom without cutting back into bare old wood.

Fun fact: The hybrid takes its name from Darley Dale in Derbyshire, the English nursery village where the cross between two heath species first appeared.
