Purple Coneflower is the prairie perennial everyone recognizes — purple-pink rays sweeping back from a bold golden-brown cone on stems stiff enough to stand through weather. Echinacea purpurea arrives as a live 4-inch plant.

It belongs in the sunny, informal half of the garden: prairie-style plantings, a wildflower strip, the middle of a mixed border where two-to-four-foot clumps can hold their own. Bees and butterflies work the cones all summer, cut stems last well indoors, and if you leave a few heads standing into fall the birds will strip the seed for you.

Fun fact: the name comes from the Greek echinos, hedgehog. Run a thumb across that spiny central cone and the comparison makes itself.
