Rock Purslane forms a spreading mat of rubbery, blue-green succulent leaves, and from summer into fall it holds bright magenta-violet flowers above them.

Native to Chile, it is made for tough, dry ground: use it as a ground cover on a sunny slope, in a rock garden, at the front of a dry border, or in a container. Plant it in full sun, water moderately, and let the soil dry between waterings. It tolerates heat and drought, and deer usually leave it alone. It is a good choice for hot spots where thirstier plants struggle, and it looks at home beside agaves, sedums and other succulents.

Fun fact: It is often sold as Calandrinia spectabilis, but botanists place it in the genus Cistanthe.
