Diamond Heights Ceanothus is a live 4-inch plant grown for light: golden-chartreuse leaves splashed with irregular dark green centers that hold color right through the year, then clusters of fragrant blue flowers over the top in spring.

Low and spreading, Ceanothus griseus var. horizontalis 'Diamond Heights' works as a luminous ground cover on a sunny bank or spills from the rim of a large outdoor pot, staying knee-high and considerably wider than tall. Once established it asks for very little water — soak only after the soil has begun to dry. Trim lightly after bloom and pull out any plain green shoots that revert.

Fun fact: Ceanothus goes by California lilac, yet it is no relation to lilac at all. It sits in the buckthorn family, and the resemblance stops at the flower clusters.
