Eversheen Japanese Sedge arches out in fine blades striped lime-yellow down the center and edged deep green, building a neat evergreen mound that catches light in places nothing else does. It ships as a live 4-inch plant.

Carex oshimensis 'Eversheen' is the sedge to repeat. It stays compact and fine-textured enough to plant in threes and fives along a path edge, through a shaded bed, or around the base of hostas and ferns without looking coarse, and it holds its color in patio containers year-round. Full sun or partial shade both work as long as moisture stays steady.

Grower's note: Skip the shears. Sedge resents hard cutting — run your fingers through the mound in summer and comb out the dead blades instead, and top-dress with a little compost in spring.
