Drummond's Sundrops (Calylophus drummondianus) is a radiant, low-growing prairie native perennial that blazes through the dry summer garden with large, brilliant golden-yellow four-petaled flowers that open in the morning sunlight and glow with the warm luminosity of a miniature evening primrose — to which it is closely related. Wiry, spreading stems clothed in narrow, dark green leaves spread into a loose, relaxed mat that produces an almost continuous succession of these vivid, cheerful blooms from late spring through fall, performing with particular vitality during the heat of midsummer when many other flowering perennials are resting. The flowers are elegantly simple and utterly sun-drenched in character — as though they were made of captured sunlight.

Cultivated from Professional Grade root systems, Drummond's Sundrops is a superb and underutilized perennial for xeriscape borders, rock gardens, dry prairie-inspired plantings, and sunny slope stabilization throughout the Southern Plains, Southwest, and Rocky Mountain West. It thrives in the lean, sharp-draining, hot conditions of its native Texas Hill Country and Great Plains habitat and demands virtually no supplemental irrigation once its root system is firmly established. Its spreading habit and continuous bloom make it an outstanding groundcover choice for sunny, dry garden situations where conventional perennials struggle to perform.

    Why You'll Love It

    • Brilliant Golden-Yellow Evening Primrose Blooms: Large, luminous four-petaled golden-yellow flowers in the classic evening primrose form open in the morning sun and glow with warm, saturated color from late spring through fall — a continuous, cheerful blaze of pure sunshine yellow in the dry summer garden.
    • Exceptional Heat & Drought Tolerance: A true xeriscape champion native to the hot, lean soils of the Texas Hill Country and Southern Great Plains — thrives with minimal to no supplemental irrigation once established and performs at its very best during the intense heat of midsummer.
    • Continuous Spreading Groundcover Habit: Low, wiry spreading stems form a loose, relaxed mat that covers dry ground attractively, suppresses weeds, and cascades beautifully over rock garden ledges, raised bed edges, and sunny embankments.
    • Native Bee & Pollinator Magnet: Open, accessible golden flowers attract native bees, mining bees, and beneficial insects throughout the long bloom season — providing sustained pollinator support in dry, low-water garden ecosystems.
    • Underutilized Xeriscape Gem: A little-known but outstanding performer for dry garden enthusiasts — Calylophus drummondianus brings reliable, long-season golden color to sun-drenched, water-wise plantings where few other perennials can match its heat resilience and continuous bloom output.

These 4" healthy live plants thrive in full sun in sharply drained, lean to sandy soil. Excellent drainage is absolutely essential — Calylophus will not tolerate clay, heavy soils, or consistently moist conditions. Water sparingly during the first season to establish, then transition to minimal or no supplemental irrigation. Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9; native to Texas, the Southern Great Plains, and the Rocky Mountain foothills. Mature height: 6–18 inches; spread: 18–24 inches. Blooms late spring through fall. Trim back lightly in early spring before new growth emerges to remove any winter-killed stems and encourage a tidy, vigorous new season of growth and bloom.
