Orange Stalked Bulbine holds clear orange stars on slim bare stalks above a low fan of narrow, almost succulent green leaves. This live 4-inch Bulbine frutescens blooms from spring into autumn — a long run of color for very little work.

It spreads into a loose clumping mat, which makes it a genuinely useful ground cover for the hot, dry, fast-draining places most plants sulk in: gravel gardens, parking strips, the front edge of a sunny border, a terracotta pot. Bees and butterflies work the flowers all season, deer and rabbits generally pass it by, and wet soil is about the only way to disappoint it. Snap off spent stalks to keep it going.

Fun fact: look into the center of one flower and you will find fuzzy yellow-bearded stamens — the giveaway that this South African native sits in the aloe family rather than among the lilies.
