Di Cicco Broccoli is a certified organic live 3-inch starter plant of an Italian heirloom that has been earning its keep since the 1890s. It sets a modest three- to four-inch main head held well above the leaves, then keeps going with a long run of tender side shoots.

That habit is the reason to grow it. Cut the main head at about three inches rather than waiting for size, and the plant answers with weeks of slim spears for the kitchen — a steadier supply than one big cut-and-done head. It matures fast at roughly 48 days and suits both spring and fall sowings. Let a few shoots run and the yellow flowers are edible too.

Fun fact: broccoli, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi and cabbage are all the same species. Centuries of selecting different parts of one wild plant produced every one of them.
