About this Plant
Bergenia (Bergenia cordifolia) is a bold, evergreen perennial cherished for its large, lustrous, heart-shaped leaves that form dramatic low-growing clumps of deep glossy green. In late winter to early spring, clusters of bright rose-pink flowers emerge on sturdy red stems well ahead of most other perennials, offering one of the earliest and most welcome floral displays of the year. As temperatures drop in fall and winter, the foliage transitions to rich shades of red, burgundy, and bronze — earning Bergenia its charming nickname, "pigsqueak," from the sound its leaves make when rubbed together.
These Professional Grade 4" plants are grown to the highest nursery standards, producing vigorous root systems that establish quickly and spread steadily to form weed-suppressing groundcover colonies. Bergenia is exceptionally versatile — equally at home in partial shade beneath trees, along shaded pathways, at the edge of water features, or tucked into rock gardens. Its ability to thrive in challenging conditions, including dry shade and heavy clay soils, makes it one of the most dependable workhorses of the perennial garden.
- Bold Evergreen Foliage Year-Round: Large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves maintain attractive structure in the garden through all four seasons, providing reliable visual interest even when not in bloom.
- Early Spring Blooms: One of the first perennials to flower, producing cheerful clusters of rose-pink blooms in late winter to early spring — a vital early nectar source for emerging pollinators.
- Stunning Fall & Winter Color: Foliage transforms to rich red, burgundy, and bronze tones with cooler temperatures, providing beautiful seasonal color change throughout autumn and winter.
- Thrives in Dry Shade: One of the most shade and drought tolerant foliage perennials available, excelling in challenging dry shade conditions beneath trees and along north-facing borders where few other plants succeed.
- Excellent Groundcover & Weed Suppressor: Dense, low-growing clumps spread steadily over time, naturally suppressing weeds and reducing maintenance while creating a lush, textured carpet of foliage.
These 4" healthy live plants thrive in partial shade to full shade, though they will tolerate full sun in cooler climates with adequate moisture. Water regularly until established; drought tolerant once mature. Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8; mature height 12–18 inches with a spread of 18–24 inches. Bloom time is late winter to early spring (February–April). An exceptional choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and groundcover applications.
